Every puppy is cute especially little Basset Hound ones, but just because they are cute doesn't mean they are meant to be good show dogs. They make an excellent pet but not be successful in the show ring. When a judge enters the show ring he is looking for a dog that meets the description of the standard set out by the laws set up by the official Basset Hound Association in their bylaws. The dog that comes closet to the standard is the dog that will win the competition. In this article I would like to highlight some of the qualities you should look for in a show puppy.

First, show prospects are usually sold for more money. The breeder has put a lot of time and money into these puppies therefore the higher cost. Also in purebred puppies there are usually less dogs to a litter.

Second, sometimes a breeder may take less money but there will be some strings attached to the deal. Such as they may want the pick of the first litter your dog has, or they may want to use your dog to sire future puppies or they may want to be part owners in your dog for showing purposes.

Third, make sure your puppy has the proper documentation necessary to prove they are are a good quality show dog. The proper papers will effect your dogs future. So make sure you are always dealing with a reputable breeder. There art too many people who are not really who they say they are.

Lastly, Basset Hounds are a breed that change greatly from being a puppy to an older dog,. You may want to consider purchasing a puppy at around the age of 6 months, when they may have already have had a few wins. In this way you will be better able to see the dogs form and possibilities.
